FOR CARNIVAL PARADE

The Samba Parade at the Sambadrome in Rio de Janeiro is one of the most famous and visually spectacular events of the annual Carnival celebration. Known in Portuguese as “Desfile das Escolas de Samba”, it is the highlight of Rio’s Carnival.

It is a profound cultural expression of Brazilian identity, showcasing the rhythmic diversity of samba music and dance. It also highlights social issues, with many schools using the parade as a platform to convey messages about political, social and environmental concerns.

This grand parade is not only a major tourist attraction but also a fierce competition between the samba schools of Rio de Janeiro.
Location and Structure
The parade takes place at the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí, commonly known as the Sambadrome, which is a purpose-built parade area in Rio de Janeiro designed by the architect Oscar Niemeyer. It features grandstands, boxes, and a long runway-style parade route that allows samba schools to perform their elaborate dances and floats as thousands of spectators watch from both sides.

The Parade

The parade features various samba schools from across Rio, formed by community groups from many neighborhoods. Each school represents a different community and competes in the parade in a rigorous and exuberant display of samba music, dance, and themed floats. Each school chooses a theme that is depicted through their costumes, floats, and choreography. The performances are judged on several categories including costume, music, dance, and overall harmony.

Each school has about 65 to 75 minutes to parade down the Sambadrome runway, performing their elaborately choreographed routines to impress the judges and spectators.

THE PARADE IS DIVIDED INTO TWO GROUPS:
Special Group (Main Parade) Parades on Sunday, Monday and Tuesday

The Special Group consists of the top samba schools and is considered the major league in the Rio Carnival. This parade is highly competitive and features the most elaborate performances, costumes, and floats. The schools in this group are typically well-funded and have a large base of supporters.

The performances are judged on several criteria, and the stakes are high, as the results can greatly influence the funding and support the schools receive for the next year. The winner of the Special Group gains immense prestige and the 2 schools with the lowest results will descend to the Access group.

Access Group (Second Tier)

Schools in the Access Group are essentially competing for promotion to the Special Group. The top 2 performers in the Access Group can ascend to the Special Group, replacing the lowest-ranked schools from the Special Group.

Parades on Saturday (before the special group)
Although still spectacular, the Access Group schools generally have less funding and media coverage compared to the Special Group. Their costumes and floats might be less extravagant but are nonetheless creative and vibrant.

Like the Special Group, schools in the Access Group are also judged on their performances, but the criteria might be slightly more lenient considering the differences in resources.

Winner Parade Parades on Saturday (after carnival week)

The Winners’ Parade in Rio de Janeiro Carnival is a splendid finale to the annual samba school competition held at the Sambadrome Marquês de Sapucaí. Taking place on the Saturday following the main parade days, after Carnival, it showcases the best of the best from the carnival. The parade features the top six samba schools from the Special Group. These are the schools that have scored the highest in various judging criteria during the main competition. The champion of the Access Group also participates, celebrating their victory and upcoming promotion to the Special Group for the next year’s Carnival.

The winners’ parade is a highly anticipated event, drawing large crowds eager to witness the best of the Carnival. It offers a chance to relive the magic of the top-performing samba schools and celebrates the cultural significance and artistic brilliance of Brazil’s most iconic festival.

Tickets for the Winners’ Parade typically sell out quickly, as it is a popular event and they are generally cheaper than those for the main parade nights.

Remember, Carnival is about the celebration of life and culture, and the less baggage you carry, the more freely you can dance to the samba beats. Enjoy the parade, the people, and the passion that is Rio’s Carnival!
